THE TOUGHEST RACE IN THE WORLD!
The Barkley Marathons is an infamous ultramarathon held annually in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee. Known as one of the toughest races in the world, with only 20 finishers to date, Jasmin Paris has become the first woman ever to do so.
The race challenges runners to complete five 20-26 mile loops within a 60-hour limit, totalling approximately 100 miles. The course features 54,200 feet of vertical ascent and descent, equivalent to climbing Mount Everest twice.
But it doesn't stop there... The race features a challenging 20-mile (32 km) unmarked loop that runners must navigate using their own notes, with water available at two points. The loop begins and ends at the yellow road gate where participants park. For the 100-mile version, runners complete the loop five times, alternating directions for loops two and four, and the fifth loop follows the first-placed runner's choice. Depending on the start time, some loops may be run at night. To complete the race, competitors must also find between 9 and 15 books along the course, removing the page corresponding to their race number as proof of completion. Each runner is assigned an odd number, which changes with each lap, reflecting the unique challenges of this event.
