2026 Bahrain Grand Prix Moves to Malaysia: F1 Returns to Sepang

The 2026 Formula 1 season takes an unusual turn this weekend as the Bahrain Grand Prix moves to Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit. Traditionally held in the Kingdom of Bahrain, this year’s race has been relocated amid conflict and uncertainty in the Middle East.

Officially titled the 2026 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, the event takes place from 2–4 October, with the main race scheduled for Sunday, 4 October. It marks Formula 1’s return to Sepang for the first time since 2017, bringing the circuit back into the spotlight after a nine-year absence.

Sepang presents a demanding challenge for drivers and teams. Its combination of long straights, fast corners and technical sections creates opportunities for close racing, while Malaysia’s heat, humidity and unpredictable weather could add another layer of complexity to the weekend.

For drivers who have previously competed at the circuit, the race offers a return to familiar territory. For others, practice sessions will be crucial as they learn the track and work with their teams to fine-tune their approach. With limited recent Formula 1 experience at Sepang, adapting quickly could play an important role in the outcome.

The relocation gives this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix a distinctive place in the calendar, retaining its name and Gulf Air title sponsorship while taking place thousands of kilometres from its usual home.

The race begins at 3 p.m. Malaysia time, which is 10 a.m. in Bahrain, 3 a.m. Eastern Time and midnight Pacific Time. Fans in Bahrain can look forward to a Sunday morning of racing as the championship continues at one of Southeast Asia’s best-known motorsport venues.
